I’m gingerly picking my way back over the stone path along the Kalalau trail on Kauai’s Napali Coastline. It’s the last 1/4 mile of an eight-mile hike to the Hanakapi’ai Falls. It’s my fourth visit to Kauai, my fourth hike on the Kalalau Trail, and my third visit to the waterfall. You could say — I’m addicted.

If you’re not familiar with the Napali Coastline, it’s where the jagged, majestic, verdant green volcanic cliffs meet the crystal clear and brilliant sparkling blue of the pacific ocean. The views are epic, and the natural beauty is incomparable.

If you’ve never heard of the Kalalau Trail, it’s a 22-mile round-trip footpath that traverses the Napali coast, and it’s rated nine out of ten on the Sierra Clubs difficulty rating.

The vegetation is so lush that plants burst from moss-covered rocks, and wild orchids abound. Crystal clear rainwater seeps from the cliffs, and you’re never far from low-hanging passionfruit if you get hungry.

It’s my last day of nine on Kauai, and I’ve saved this particular hike for last, so I’ll be worn out on the plane home. After eight days on Kauai away from television, traffic, tailgating, stress, and the 2020 election, my mind is in a…
